- JEE Advanced qualifiers can fill both IIT and NIT choices in the same list
- If allotted an IIT seat, you can still Float to get a better IIT or switch to an NIT if you prefer
- JEE Advanced rank is used for IIT seats; JEE Main rank is used for NIT/IIIT seats
- IIT preparatory courses: very low JEE Advanced ranks can get into preparatory programs at some IITs

Can You Get an NIT if You Clear JEE Advanced?
Yes. JEE Advanced qualifiers can also get NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA using their JEE Main rank. If your JEE Advanced rank is poor but your JEE Main rank is good, you can still get a top NIT. Fill both IIT and NIT choices in the same JoSAA list.
IIT Branch Change After First Year
Many IITs allow branch change after the first year based on academic performance (CGPA). If you get a lower-preference branch at a good IIT, you can potentially upgrade to your preferred branch by performing in the top 2–5% of your batch. This is competitive but possible.
Physical Reporting at IIT
After final allotment, each IIT sets its own reporting date (usually 2–3 weeks after final JoSAA round). You must physically report for document verification and complete admission formalities. Failure to report by the deadline results in automatic seat cancellation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum JEE Advanced rank for IIT admission?
There is no fixed minimum — it depends on which IIT and which branch. Newer IITs have seats accessible at ranks of 5,000–10,000+ for core branches. Preparatory courses at some IITs are available at even higher ranks for SC/ST candidates.
Can I withdraw from IIT and join NIT instead?
Yes. If you are allotted an IIT seat but prefer an NIT (for a specific branch), you can withdraw from the IIT allotment during JoSAA (forfeiting the acceptance fee) and wait for NIT allotment. But think carefully — this is irreversible.
Is JoSAA registration different for JEE Advanced students?
JoSAA registration is the same portal for all. JEE Advanced students log in with JEE Advanced credentials to access IIT choices. You can also add NIT/IIIT choices in the same registration using your JEE Main credentials.
How long does IIT physical reporting and verification take?
Typically 1–2 days. You visit the campus, submit original documents, pay remaining fees, and complete enrollment formalities. Most IITs complete this in a single day for well-prepared students.
